  • JOB SUMMARY
    The Operating Room Registered Nurse, under minimum supervision, provides safe, quality patient care in the OR, adhering to all policies and procedures of the facility. The Registered Nurse is accountable for the assessing; planning, implementing and coordinating patient care from admission to discharge of the OR areas. The Registered Nurse functions as a patient advocate utilizing the Patient’s Bill of Rights. The OR Registered Nurse is responsible for the achievement of patient outcomes in accordance with the mission of the Center. He/she demonstrates professional growth and development by accepting responsibility and accountability for one’s nursing practice. The RN practices within the framework of the Wyoming Nurse Practice Act, American Nurses Association professional standards, National Patient Safety Goals, and AORN Standards of Care.
  • PRIMARY JOB DUTIES
    • Assesses patient status preoperatively, intraoperatively, and post operatively on a continuing basis and documents in patient record
    • Provides safe, age appropriate, therapeutic and quality patient care to the patient by utilizing the nursing process and nursing diagnosis in a timely manner and by setting appropriate priorities. Implements and coordinates nursing interventions to enhance achievement of expected outcomes and to ensure readiness for discharge.
    • Ensures provision of patient care daily in an organized and timely manner.
    • Utilizes nursing care standards when planning and implementing patient care.
    • Communicates appropriate information to surgeons and anesthesiologists concerning patient care.
    • Safely carries out physician’s orders correctly and promptly, documenting all activities.
    • Initiates and participates in the patient’s and family education. Assesses learning needs according to patient’s level of understanding and readiness to learn.
    • Displays an understanding of each patient’s cognitive, physical, emotional and chronological maturity in the assessments, treatment, and care.
    • Demonstrates complete understanding of established emergency procedures for the Center.
    • Demonstrates the ability to direct and provide for patient care in emergency situations.
    • Demonstrates the ability to make decisions concerning Center based problems.
    • Participates in the orientation of nursing and ancillary staff as requested.
    • Participates in developing standardized patient education programs as requested
    • Reviews the pre-op assessment of the patient and communicates any problems to the appropriate person.
    • Safely positions patients for the operative procedures being performed taking into consideration the patient’s assessment including age and skin condition.
    • Able to provide age appropriate care.
    • Demonstrates an understanding of the procedures performed within the OR area and the nursing role for their implementation.
    • Competency to administer drugs and solutions as prescribed.
    • Knowledgeable of conscious sedation practices, which include the administration, maintenance, and reversal while providing and maintaining care of the consciously sedated patient.
    • Takes part in post-op teaching and communicates any problems to the appropriate person.
    • Participates in marketing Powder River Surgery Center as requested.
    • Participates in the Quality Improvement/Risk Management Program activities including identification of opportunities for cost reductions and efficiencies.
    • Works to achieve and maintain regulatory certification and accreditation of the Center familiarizing themselves with AORN standards, Medicare and State requirements, and AAASC standards.
    • Practices infection control and standard precautions as instructed.
    • Completes all employee/patient incident documentation in a thorough and timely manner.
    • Demonstrates the willingness to assume charge nurse responsibility as assigned.
    • Complies with the hospital’s Corporate Compliance Program including, but not limited to, the Code of Conduct, laws and regulations, and hospital policies and procedures.
    • Must be free from governmental sanctions involving health care and/or financial practices.
    • Provides service excellence to all customers.
    • Maintains a clean and safe environment.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
    • Fosters a positive and professional environment by interacting with all persons in a considerate, helpful and courteous manner.
    • Maintains confidentiality of Center and patient information as required by Center policy.

    • Documents all patient information according to established standards of care, policies and procedures.
    • Provides an accurate, concise and pertinent report about the patient’s condition and response to care to relief personnel.
    • Attends and participates in all applicable training and development workshops scheduled by the Center.
    • Maintains and displays appropriate knowledge of professional development through printed material or other sources.
    • Attends professional training seminars when appropriate for job development and shares information with other staff members.
    • Ability to provide a unit based inservices, as requested.
    • Participates in marketing the Center as requested.
    • Maintains dress and appearance according to the Center dress code.
    • Diffuses/resolves conflict by appropriately communicating with those involved.
    • Participates in the Quality Improvements/Risk Management Program activities including identification of opportunities for cost reductions and efficiencies.
    • Accepts constructive criticism and gives suggestions in a professional manner.
    • Maintains required professional licensure.
    • Demonstrates the willingness to assume charge nurse responsibility as assigned.
    • Maintains acceptable attendance and punctuality to maximize contribution to the organization in accordance with Center policy.
    • Requests scheduled time off according to Center policy and procedure.
    • Provides notification for unscheduled absences or tardiness in accordance with established Center procedures.
  • JOB SPECIFICATIONS
    • Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
    • Licensure: Wyoming license (active and renewed on time).
    • Must have current Healthcare Provider CPR or Red Cross Professional Rescuer certification within 31 days of employment.
    • ACLS required (Within 6 months of employment and maintained throughout employment)
    • PALS certification preferred.
    • CPAN preferred
    • Experience: Two years Pre-op and/or Post-op experience, depending on area assigned, preferably in an ambulatory surgery center. Pain management, GI, and conscious sedation experience highly desirable.
    • Essential Technical/Motor Skills: Hand/eye coordination in order to give injections, draw blood, start IVs, use computer, etc. Speaking clearly to communicate with patients, families, physicians and staff regarding patient condition and care.
    • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to develop positive interaction with patients, patient families, physicians and staff in order to effectively care for the patients.
    • Essential Physical Requirements: Ability to lift/transfer patients in excess of 100 pounds, which may require pushing, pulling, and utilizing a full range of body movements. Ability to stand walk, stoop, kneel, crouch and/or crawl.
    • Ability to withstand prolonged periods of standing and walking.
    • Essential Mental Abilities: Must be able to assess a patient’s condition, formulate a plan of care, select appropriate interventions, and evaluate patient response to care/treatment and to explain/teach patients about their condition/recovery. Requires higher level of mental faculties accompanied by short- and long-term memory. Ability to function in stressful situations.
    • Essential Sensory Requirements: Corrected vision, hearing to normal range.
    • Exposure to Hazards: OSHA CATEGORY I. TASK THAT INVOLVES EXPOSURE TO BLOOD, BODY FLUIDS, OR TISSUES. All procedures or other job-related tasks that involve an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids, or tissues, or potential for spills or splashes of them, are Category I Tasks. Use of appropriate protective measures is required for every employee engaged in Category I Tasks.
    • Hours of Work: Ability to flex work hours as needed and/or requested by management. Employees will not be required, but may choose, to take call or float to CCH surgery department.
