Under the general supervision of the Specimen Processing Supervisor, the Laboratory Assistant performs specific pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical tasks. He/she interacts with other healthcare professionals, responding to routine inquiries. The Laboratory Assistant receives physicians' requests and collects blood specimens from adult, pediatric and newborn patients by venipuncture, arterial puncture and skin puncture. Prioritizes incoming specimens, processing and distributing to the appropriate areas for processing in accordance with the order status. The Laboratory Assistant performs general office duties, general laboratory cleaning, and may perform other tasks as assigned. He/she has reached area appropriate (Main Laboratory, PCOL, or Bond Clinic Laboratory) department specific skills. This summary is not all inclusive.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Proficient in all aspects of phlebotomy (adult, pediatric, newborn, arterial, venous, capillary)

2. Processes all specimens including blood and non-blood

3. Resolves issues and/or errors with specimens and/or specimen integrity and all specimen processing problems

4. Displays effective communication skills with hospital and department staff

5. Strives to attain excellent patient satisfaction scores as well as actively participate in attaining department productivity goals

Education
High school graduate or equivalent.

Minimum Work Experience
One year experience in clinical laboratory setting as a phlebotomist or laboratory assistant preferred.

Certification/Licenses
None required, PBT (ASCP) preferred.

Mental/Physical Requirements

Close mental and visual attention required for short periods of time. A minimum of 50% of time is spent standing and walking throughout department and facility. Must be able to lift and/or carry up to 20 lbs. (May be met with appropriate accommodations if deemed necessary.)

Working Conditions

Constant exposure to infectious and chemical materials. Works in air-conditioned environment with moderate noise levels. May be required to work any time of day.
