The Senior Phlebotomist is responsible for executing the plasmapheresis process by performing venipunctures.
Additional Responsibilities Include:
- Maintains compliance with SOP, current Good Manufacturing Procedures (cGMP) and regulatory guidelines
- Reviews donor record files to ensure for completeness, accuracy and compliance with cGMP
- Complies with federal, state, local and company-specific regulations related to quality of product, employee and donor safety and to the proper performance of day-to-day activities
- Labels and ensures each unit and samples are labeled accurately
- Sets up and prepares all equipment and disposable supplies for venipuncture and plasmapheresis procedures
- Performs venipunctures and plasma collection
- Operates and maintains the automated plasmapheresis machines including response and evaluation of all alarms and machine errors, documentation of exceptions, etc.
- Removes and/or replaces equipment from service
- Maintains proper ratio to ensure donor safety and quality of product
- Ensures proper disposal of all contaminated disposable equipment
- Maintains accurate and thorough documentation of necessary records, including PCS-2 Machine Logs
- Monitors and assists center physicians with donor reactions
- Ensures donor confidentiality, meets customer service expectations, greets and acknowledges donors as they are assigned to donation area and after completing donation process
- Assists management team in monitoring inventory levels, stocking supplies and opening and closing lots for usage
- Acts as person accountable for area operations including but not limited to donor flow, break schedules and minor donor complaint resolution in absence of the Donor Floor Supervisor
- Trains and provides leadership to new/existing employees
- Provides positive and effective guidance to Donor Floor staff
- Reports quality issues and procedural deviations to Quality Assurance and Management
- Maintains cleanliness of work area to ensure a clean and professional environment
- Maintains thorough familiarity with all state and federal regulations, standard operating procedures, OSHA, CLIA, cGMP and internal company procedures
- Communicates with management regarding pertinent information related to work areas
- Educates new donors on the use of products
- Responsible for changing supply lot numbers
- High School Diploma or equivalent (GED)
- Phlebotomy certificate or license (as required by state)
- Minimum 1-2 years experience in a medical or health care environment preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Specialized medical or phlebotomy training preferred
- Strong leadership and customer service skills and the ability to understand and implement protocol are required
- Must have basic computer knowledge
- Must be able to make accurate and complete documentation
- Must be able to speak, read, write and understand English. Bilingual skills in Spanish preferred in some locations
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety regulations, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals
- Ability to read numbers on screening equipment such as scales, thermometers, graphs, digital vital signs monitor and refractometers
- Ability to work day and evening hours, weekends, holidays and extended shifts on a frequent basis
- CPR certification or the ability to obtain certification preferred
