Description:
The job of Child Care Asst. was established for the purpose/s of assisting assistant cottage managers and residential case manager in providing a safe, comfortable, clean and wholesome environment for students in residence at N.E.W. B.O.C.E.S. with specific responsibilities of interacting with students and helping them to accomplish their daily living tasks; and assisting students with special care needs. This job reports to Cottage Team Trainer and Residential Cottage Manager.
  • Adheres to safety guidelines as defined by the N.E.W. B.O.C.E.S. administration for the purpose of ensuring the students are maintained in a safe environment.

  • Administers first aid and prescription medication (under the direction of a health care professional) for the purpose of providing emergency and necessary care in compliance with established guidelines.

  • Administers medical assistance as instructed by a health care professional (e.g. diapering, tube feeding, colostomy bags, etc.) for the purpose of meeting immediate health care needs and/or developing children’s daily living activities and behavioral skills.

  • Applies proper physical restraint techniques when necessary for the purpose of protecting the safety of students and staff.

  • Assists residential case manager and assistant cottage managers with organizing and monitoring appropriate activities (e.g. games, art, music, hygiene, laundry, etc.) for the purpose of reinforcing I.E.P. goals and academic concepts.

  • Assists students in preparing their nightly and weekend meals for the purpose of ensuring they are well nourished and they are following correct and safe practices in preparing their meals.

  • Attends meetings and in-service presentations (e.g. emergency procedures, computer training, first aid, CPR, CPI, building meetings, etc.) for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.

  • Cleans and maintains residential area for the purpose of ensuring area is in a sanitary and safe condition.

  • Communicates with teachers, residential case manager, assistant cottage managers and administration for the purpose of assisting in evaluating progress and/or implementing I.E.P. objectives.

  • Drives school vehicles for the purpose of transporting N.E.W. B.O.C.E.S. students over scheduled routes to and from school and/or field trips in a safe and timely manner.

  • Guides NEW BOCES students in completing their IEP goals (e.g. personal interactions, daily work tasks, personal hygiene, laundry, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring they stay on task and complete their work in a timely, efficient and safe manner.

  • Maintains program equipment and work areas (e.g. instructional tools, computers, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring availability of items and/or providing a safe learning environment.

  • Monitors individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings (e.g. residential areas, field trips, walks, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.

  • Organizes indoor/outdoor activities appropriate to age group for the purpose of actively participating in learning activities with children.

  • Possesses a knowledge of student medical concerns, behavior management plans, and transportation plans for the purpose of ensuring student IEP goals and objectives are met.

  • Prepares logs, reports, and documents (e.g. behavioral/accident reports, documentation of activities, etc.) for the purpose of conveying information, providing written reference, and/or meeting mandated requirements.

  • Promotes good habits for the purpose of improving the quality of student’s outcome and encouraging student development.

  • Removes snow for the purpose of ensuring sidewalks and entry ways are safe for people to travel on.

  • Other Functions
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

    SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.     KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: stages of child development; age appropriate activities; and positive reinforcement techniques.

    Working Environment
    The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, (50 lb. minimum), carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; significant stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 20% sitting, 40% walking, and 40% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
