The Alaska Veterans and Pioneers Home located in Palmer is hiring an on call Nurse II position. The on call Nurse serves as an important member of the team by filling in for the full time staff during planned and unexpected absences.

The Duties of the selected applicant include but are not limited to:
  • Under the general direction of the RN III, the selected applicant provides professional nursing care to residents, physical/psychosocial assessment, and development of plan of care.
  • Treatment is provided through medication administration, observation for both objective and subjective symptoms, nursing interventions, documentation of findings and reporting pertinent information to the resident's primary care physician.
  • Assess Resident needs for medical and dental care; equipment and referrals are identified and coordinated by the Nurse.
  • Communication is facilitated between family and staff to promote resident quality of life.
  • This Nurse II provides role modeling, assistance, guidance, and education to care team members, to insure appropriate resident care and efficient teamwork.

This facility is an Eden Alternative facility. The selected candidate may have contact with pets including birds, cats, and dogs.


Knowledge, Skills, AND Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of nursing.
  • Considerable knowledge of the behavior and needs of patients.
  • Considerable knowledge of the uses and affects of narcotics and drugs including psychotropic medications.
  • Considerable knowledge of medical terminology and hospital equipment.
  • Skill in the application of nursing techniques.
  • Ability to observe, evaluate and report reactions and changes in the physical behavioral and mental condition of patients.
  • Ability to carry out therapeutic interactions with patients.
  • Ability to think and act quickly in emergencies.
  • Ability to interpret and apply medical orders.
  • Ability to administer treatments and medications and observe for and report adverse reactions.
  • Ability to maintain records and to prepare clear, concise reports.
  • Ability to lead others in the work.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from a school of nursing accredited by the National League of Nursing or license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Alaska.
AND
One year of entry level professional nursing. This experience is equivalent to Nurse I with the State of Alaska.

Other combinations of training and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability; however, there is no substitution for the required training.

Special Note:

Eligibility for licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Alaska is required.

Some positions are located in institutions providing care for psychiatric or developmentally disabled individuals and require one year experience in these specialized fields.

For some positions in this job class a background investigation including fingerprinting is required.


ADDITIONAL REQUIRED INFORMATION:

At time of interview applicant must provide:
  • Two (2) professional references and three (3) character references with current contact information.
  • License to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Alaska.

At time of employment, applicant must provide:
  • A copy of current CPR and First Aid certificate(s), if available.
  • Most recent TB test results, which must be within 30 days of the established start date.

CLASSIFICATION STUDY:
Effective July 16, 2019, a classification study of the Nurse job class series will result in a range and salary increase from what is stated in this recruitment. The selected applicant's payroll will change accordingly if appointed to this position prior to this date.
