Wexford Health has an exceptional opportunity for a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner to join our team of healthcare professionals at Fountain Correctional Facility in Atmore, Alabama.

POSITION SUMMARY

Responsible and accountable for evaluating and treating inmate patients upon referral. Acts as a consultant to the nursing staff. Responsible for the delivery of contracted services, personnel, and coordination of psychiatric/behavioral health services and programs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Supports and provides direction for the psychiatric and behavioral health care delivery system and coordinates with the other functions within the institution.
Performs physical examinations as required.
Responsible for emergency care in critical conditions.
Provides documentation in accordance with unit policies and procedures utilizing the SOAP charting format.
Monitors and ensures the appropriate utilization of psychotropic medications
Initiates requests for commonly performed initial laboratory studies.
Identifies normal and abnormal findings on history, physical examination, and commonly performed laboratory studies.
Dispenses, prescribes and administers medications as specified in the drug formulary protocol for mid-level practitioners and as approved by the appropriate regulatory boards.
Provides counseling and instruction regarding common patient problems.
Ensures compliance with ACA/CMA standards and State and correctional system regulations policies and procedures. Upon site visits, meets with Health Service Administrator and facility Warden to assure open communication.
Meets regularly with the site mental health staff to ensure appropriate provision of services.
Provides training for behavioral health and institutional staff on mental health issues as requested.
Provides consultation services to institutional staff for mental health issues as requested.
May be required to provide clinical supervision as appropriate.
Follows and enforces security regulations for keys, sharps, and controlled medications.
Adheres to and enforces safety and security policies and participates in disaster drills.
Attends mandatory and optional in-service training.
Maintains open lines of communication via attendance at staff meeting when possible.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Standard medical setting in a correctional facility, which includes daily interfacing with inmates, correctional staff, and health care personnel. Temperature extremes may be encountered while moving throughout the facility outdoors and indoors in buildings without air conditioning.

The following requirements list the minimum to qualify. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted.

LICENSING: Current license as a Clinical Nurse Practitioner/Specialist in the State of Alabama (ANCC certification in psychiatry is not required)

CERTIFICATION: Board Certification by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners

EDUCATION: Master’s of Science degree in Nursing

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Knowledge and skills to access diagnose and treat medical and psychiatric disorders; and have knowledge and experience with the special needs and behavior of individuals in forensic and correctional settings.
