SUMMARY OF PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS:

Provides general nursing care to individuals served by The Arc of Shelby County in Arc facilities.

  • RESPONSIBILITIES – ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Administers prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with approved nursing techniques and Department of Mental Health requirements.
  • Maintains current medication file records, including Medication Administration Record for each individual.
  • Observes individuals, records significant conditions and reactions and notifies supervisor of condition and reaction to drugs, treatments and significant incidents.
  • Takes temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and other vital signs to detect deviations from normal and assess condition of participants as needed.
  • Serves on an on-call basis as well as availability during standard working hours.
  • Responds to life-saving situations based upon nursing standards, policies, procedures and protocol.
  • Assists with medical appointments as needed.
  • Prepares monthly MAR sheets for all participants receiving medications.
  • Documents receipt and disbursement of medications as needed for all residential participants.
  • Maintains inventory of medications.
  • Keeps current medication schedules of all participants.
  • Assures proper storage of medications.
  • Completes purchases of medical supplies as needed.
  • ANCILLARY FUNCTIONS
  • Maintain professional rapport with doctors, nurses, and pharmacy staff.
  • Keeps all staff adequately informed about medications for all participants.
  • Contacts physicians, pharmacies and needed and documents contact.
  • Build relationships with people in the community and assist people in the community become more welcoming and understanding of individuals with developmental disabilities.
  • Serve as a role model for appropriate community social interactions.
  • Participate as member of The Arc of Shelby County Safety Committee.
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned by supervisor for the purpose of ensuring the effectual and effective function of the agency.
  • WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position will primarily occur in residential settings, but may also work in day habilitation program, community or professional setting. The individual routinely uses standard office equipment such as computer, phone, copier, filing, postage machine and others.

  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

While some of the duties are sedentary, there may be times that require lifting, positioning and assisting individuals or lifting equipment, materials, etc. Ability to perform duties in variety of community settings, including private homes, community based facilities and other various sites. Ability to lift at least 50 pounds.

  • QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION

Current Alabama Licensed Practical Nurse
