LOCATION: Gadsden, Sylacauga, Montgomery, Pelham and Auburn clinics and Bowling
Green, KY Kentucky Psychiatry.
PRACTICE OVERVIEW: Alabama Psychiatry (formerly River Region Psychiatry Associates) is a
large, multi-site private practice with outpatient offices in Montgomery, Pelham, Auburn,
Alabaster, Gadsden, and Sylacauga, AL and Bowling Green, KY, as well as inpatient services
in several hospitals. Our staff currently includes Psychiatrists, Clinical Psychologists, Nurse
Practitioners, Social Workers, Therapists, and Administrative Staff. Alabama Psychiatry is again
expanding and looking to add to our psychology team with the addition of more
psychologists.
EMPLOYEE COMPENSATION: Compensation includes competitive salary, regular daytime

GENERAL SUMMARY: A Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner is an advanced practice registered
nurse who has acquired appropriate training to provide mental healthcare services to
individuals, including adults and children, and families with drug abuse problem, psychiatric
disorders or organic brain disorders.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The responsibilities for a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner entails diagnosing,
conducting, and prescribing medications for patients having psychiatric-mental health
problems and those likely to have them. The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner is responsible for
providing emergency psychiatric services, physical and psychosocial examination of their
patients and developing appropriate treatment plans and providing effective management
of patient care with proper evaluation.
KNOWLEDGE: Must possess the knowledge base in health promotion maintenance,
advanced pathophysiology, advanced health assessment and pharmacology for
advanced practice nurses. Must possess the following concepts: individual and family
psychotherapy, psychiatric-mental health nursing across the lifespan, advanced assessment
in psychiatric-mental health nursing and psychopharmacology.
EDUCATION: Must possess a minimum of a Master of Science in Nursing. Those six years are
composed of a 4-year undergraduate nursing program followed by a 2-year nurse
practitioner master's program that includes psychiatric nursing. Must possess an Alabama
State License to practice Nursing and must be in good standing.

EXPERIENCE:
1. Responsible for providing outpatient care to patients showing a change or decline in
mental status, chronic or urgent medical conditions.
2. Work independently with other members of the medical team, with entitlements to
specific clinical privileges.
3. Perform patients’ histories and physicals, risk factor assessment, ordering of therapeutic
and diagnostic tests; and attend to patient appointments.
4. Prescribe medications following the clinic’s policy, formulary and relevant regulations of
the State of Alabama.
5. Consult with physicians on cases that are beyond the scope of qualifications.
6. Put all relevant patient data in medical records and case presentations.
7. Formulate, execute and review healthcare education delivered to patients and families
for diseases prevention.
8. Ensure smooth communication with other health professionals for effective delivering of
clinic service to patients.
9. Provide consultation to the clinic’s nursing and medical staff for improvement in their
work performance, which enhances overall quality service delivery of the clinic.
10. Treats patients by utilizing psychotherapeutic methods and medications; discussing
progress toward goals with patients; providing instructions; monitoring effect of
medications; supervising staff provision of services.
11. Assures quality and safe service for patients and staff by enforcing policies, procedures,
standards, rules, CMS and private insurance requirements and legal regulations;
participating in utilization reviews; remaining available for emergency situations in clinic.
12. Provide medication management and education to those seen as patients to ensure
excellent clinical outcomes.
13. Works toward providing higher level of services to patients seen in the out-patient
setting and capturing those billable hours in the documentation provided to the billing
department.
14. Comply with the guidelines set by the Alabama and/or Kentucky Board of Medical
Examiners and the Alabama and/or Kentucky Board of Nursing for collaboration and
quality assurance program.
