Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Lead Nurse Clinician Nuclear Cardiology in collaboration with cardiac fellow and according to established criteria evaluates patients referred for exercise stress testing by reviewing history and performing brief physical examination. Administers noninvasive and nuclear cardiology exercise and pharmacology testing providing initial management of cardiac dysrhythmias and documenting results. Assumes responsibility for monitoring patient and assisting physician during performance of transesophageal echogram.

Responsibilities:
Obtains and interprets a health history specifically related to ischemic or other cardiac disease.

Performs and interprets a health history specifically related to ischemic or other cardiac disease.

Performs limited physical examinations to detect evidence of any of the following:

Heart murmur

Heart Failure

Cervical Bruit

Gallop rhythm

Edema

Vascular insufficiency

Evaluates patient according to standard criteria in order to determine if its safe for patient to undergo stress testing. Communicates findings to cardiac fellow who will give final approval for stress test to begin.

Explains stress test procedure to patient and initiates testing.

Observes and records patients vital signs (blood pressure heart rate and cardiac rhythm) during stress test and for ten minutes after completion of the test.

In the case of Thallium stress testing advises Nuclear Medicine technologist to administer isotope at appropriate stress level.

Interprets 12 lead EKG comparing rest with exercise tracings.

Recognizes and initiates therapy for life threatening cardiac dysrhythmias under protocols and in accordance with ACLS standards.

Fills out appropriate patient records detailing the results of the history physical exam EKG and stress testing.

Explains Holtor monitor procedure to patients affixes electrodes assesses adequacy of equipment and analyzes Holtor tapes at tests conclusion.

Other information:BASIC KNOWLEDGE:
Bachelors Degree preferred.

Must have current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification.

Professional and analytical skills to evaluate patients to determine safety of administering exercise stress test.

Professional and analytical ability to recognize arrhythmias and respond appropriately.

Analytical ability to interpret 12 lead EKG and compare exercise tracings and interpret Holter monitor tapes.

Ability to closely monitor data and patient conditions.

Interpersonal skills to allay patient anxiety to elicit cooperation of patient during administration of stress test and to exchange information with physicians.

Advanced skills in assessment of physical and psychosocial health-illness status of individuals history taking and physical examination.

Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care patients with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.

EXPERIENCE:
One to two years related experience plus additional on the job training.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Frequent walking and standing.

Exposure to low level radiation but little chance of injury when established safety procedures are followed.
