**This position is a Monday- Friday 8 AM to 5 PM (flexibility with schedule will be necessary as may involve working beyond 5 pm, weekends and/or holidays.)

This position will work directly with the Equine Internal Medicine service. The service tech will be responsible for client communication in scheduling of appointments, patient care including daytime emergencies, teaching of students, administrative duties associated with the service, equipment management, and maintenance of biosecurity. Client communication will include calling and scheduling an appointment, as well as providing instruction if needed for the appointment such as hold off feed, bring on hay and feed, or bringing necessary paperwork. Patient care of client and university owned animal's includes but not limited to patient handling, physical exams, medication administration (IV, IM, PO, and SQ), sample collection and submission, continuous patient monitoring, and assisting performance of examinations, procedures and administration of medications. Teaching will involve direct instruction of senior veterinary students in technical aspects of patient care. Administrative duties will include but not limited to: sample submission and recording of results, patient paperwork including recording bill charges, student schedule, and biosecurity logs. This technician will also be responsible for equipment set-up, cleaning and maintenance used by the medicine service. Maintenance of biosecurity will include but not be limited to: supervision and adherence to policy and protocol including staff, faculty and students, disinfection of equipment and areas affected, and sample collection and submission.
Minimum Qualifications
Entry into applicant pool requires an Associate's degree from an accredited institution in Veterinary Technology or a related field that qualifies an individual to obtain national certification; three (3) years of experience in the performance of advanced/specialized veterinary technician duties or in veterinary technology; and an active license with the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medicine as a Veterinary Technician or to have passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) and have met all requirements to become certified as a Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS). The salary range for Level I is $31,300 - $52,100.

Level II requires an Associate's degree from an accredited institution in Veterinary Technology or a related field that qualifies an individual to obtain national certification; four (4) years of experience in the performance of advanced/specialized veterinary technician duties or in veterinary technology; and certification as a Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS). The salary range for Level II is $35,000 - $58,400.

Level III requires an Associate's degree from an accredited institution in Veterinary Technology or a related field that qualifies an individual to obtain national certification; six (6) years of experience in the performance of advanced/specialized veterinary technician duties or in veterinary technology; and certification as a Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS). The salary range for Level III is $39,300 - $65,500.

Must have detailed knowledge of established veterinary processes, methods, and techniques, as well as the ability to obtain needed information to select and adapt methods and procedures.

Desired Qualifications
An Associate's degree from an accredited veterinary technology program and eligible for State license in Alabama. Equine nursing and handling experience. Ability to adjust and control different temperaments of horses; provide professional treatment with injuries. Possess an Alabama driver's license and the ability to drive a manual transmission truck and a tractor. Experience working with horses is strongly desired.
