What You Will Do

The Subatomic Physics Group (P-25) of Physics Division is seeking a Research Technologist 1 who will lead all the technical aspects of work conducted by the P-25 neutron team. You will operate and maintain the helium liquefier facility. You will be providing on-the-floor experimental support to experimental activities including construction and testing of a new liquid helium cryostat. The position requires work with vacuum, cryogenic (at 4K and sub-1K), mechanical, and electrical systems. In particular, work involves 1) design, construction, and operation of large sub-K liquid helium systems, 2) operation and maintenance of the cryogenic plant and ultracold neutron (UCN) source, and 3)

operation of the UCN source and the associated cryocooler system.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated expertise or qualification with the following:

    • High vacuum technology.

    • Cryogenic systems (liquid nitrogen and liquid helium)

    • Helium Liquefier or refrigerator system.

  • Demonstrated experience in technical leadership.

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to interact with all levels of personnel and customers; strong teaming skills.

  • Demonstrated experience working independently without much direction.

  • Demonstrated strong work ethic based on completed work. History of good work habits and a commitment to safety in the workplace.

  • History of achieving individual educational goals that demonstrates a desire and the ability to learn new skills.

Desired Skills:

  • Prior experience with fabrication, operation, and maintenance of liquid helium cryostats in R&D settings.

  • Either in possession of crane and forklift licenses or the ability to obtain them.

Education: Position typically requires a high school diploma and a minimum one-to-two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
