JOB SUMMARY: Under the supervision of a Licensed Behavioral Therapist, provides recreational therapy and activities for individual mental health patients and groups of mental health patients.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelor’s Degree. Specialty in a therapeutic recreation preferred. Certification as Recreational Therapy Assistant preferred. Must have current BLS and CPI.

Experience: At least on year workplace experience with a mental health population preferred or internship as recreational therapy assistant.

Physical Requirements: The physical activities involve balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, grasping, kneeling, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, standing, stooping, and use of fingers and repetitive movements. An individual in this position may be required to carry or lift weight of up to 50 lbs., and push/pull 100-150 lbs. The sensory and communicative activities required for this position include feeling, hearing, seeing, smelling, and speaking. Individuals in this position could possible be exposed to inside/outside environmental conditions, bloodborne pathogens and body fluids, chemical hazards, respiratory hazards and radiological hazards.

Skills: Must be able to develop and implement appropriate therapeutic activities for various functional levels of mental health patients, both individually and in groups. Must possess excellent communication skills, both oral and written. Ability to work with interdisciplinary team and take direction. Excellent customer service skills.

PRIMARY CUSTOMERS: Patients, family members, physicians, and co-workers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Assessment
Contributes data to patient assessment and treatment plan.
Collaborates with Behavioral Therapist and Psychiatrist to determine appropriate level of recreation therapy and activity for patient

2. Contributes to Plan of Care
Develops Activity Plan to support the patient’s goals and the treatment plan.
Reviews activity plan with therapist
Documents goals and response on the patient plan of care.

3. Implements Patient Recreational Activity Plan
Implements recreational activities appropriate for patient.
Evaluates and documents patient’s response to activities.
Revises Activity Plan based on patient’s response
Ensures effective use of resources, monitoring for cost containment.

4. Teaching
Provides activities that educate patients in life skills and appropriate social interaction.
Assesses the patient’s ability and readiness to participate in activities based on developmental age and acuity of mental illness.

5. Mental Health Care
Provides safety boundaries for patient at risk for violence.
Maintains safety of groups during activities
Communicates in a healthy and therapeutic way in all patient interactions
Provides emotional support to patients.
Challenges patient to explore options for positive change.
Confronts inappropriate behavior.
