About the Job Summary:
The Medical Assistant is a multi-skilled professional who works interdependently with other health care professionals to provide quality health care to the patient. This person should be educated and trained to perform both administrative and clinical skills in a medical office environment.
Primary Responsibilities:

Essential Functions are indicated with an *
- *Measuring and recording vital signs.
- *Recording patient interview, history and chief complaint.
- *Providing patient education as appropriate for skill level.
- *Management of disease, home treatments and special diets as appropriate for skill level.
- *Preparing patients for examinations and performing routine screening tests.
- *Assisting the providers with exams and minor office procedures.
- *Phlebotomy and collection of other lab specimens.
- *Performing basic lab tests.
- *Performing EKGs.
- *Preparing and administering medications if provider authorizes.
- *Change dressings, applying bandages, removing sutures and other first aid duties.
- *Order and maintain supplies, equipment and stock supplies.
- *Sterilize instruments.
- *Disposing of biohazard waste according to OSHA standards.
- *Arranging for hospital admissions and outside referrals for the provider.
- *Arranging prior authorizations/referrals for medication, diagnostic tests, DME or other procedures as needed.
- *Calling and faxing prescriptions to the pharmacy for the provider.
- If needed, front desk reception to include greeting and checking in patients, answering multi-line telephones and scheduling appointments.
- Mail or call test results to patients.
- *Participates in the medical office emergency routine, whenever required. Summons ambulance or EMS or assists other staff members as needed.
- Greet patients, completion of registration forms, and give instructions.
- *Following appropriate legal and ethical professional conduct.
- *Practice OSHA safety standards.
- *Performing accurate, legal, and ethical documentation at all times.
- *Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
- *Skill in English grammar, spelling and punctuation to type simple correspondence.
- Participates in staff meetings, professional development activities, maintains. professional affiliations and promotes staff interactions, harmony and teamwork.
- *Maintains regular and predictable attendance.
- *Performs related work as needed.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED), required.
- Graduation from an accredited CMA school, required.
- Computer and word processing experience, required.
- Blood drawing skills required.
- Performing injections skills required.
- Ability to speak, write and understand fluent English required.
- Ability to speak and understand Spanish desirable.
- 1-2 years experience in health care field, preferably in a clinic setting or health insurance company, preferred.
- Electronic Medical Records and Practice Management Software experience, especially Next Gen, highly desirable.
- Working knowledge of ICD-9 and CPT coding preferred.
- Ability to speak clearly and concisely.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, physicians, employees and the public.
- Ability to handle stressful situations.
- Ability to sort, read, understand and follow oral and written instruction.
- Knowledge of medical office/records filing procedures.
- Skill in operating a computer, photocopy machine, fax and scanner.
- Skill in English grammar, spelling and punctuation to type simple correspondence.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Ability to create a trustworthy and comfortable environment for the patients.
- Ability to communicate in a calm, orderly, non-threatening manner.
- Ability to maintain an outgoing, friendly attitude with patients and staff even under pressure.
- Ability to work with interruptions and to manage multiple priorities.
- Knowledge of correct grammar, spelling and punctuation.

Typical Physical Demands:
- Work requires sitting and standing for long periods of time, as well as stooping, bending and stretching for files and supplies. Occasionally lifting files or paper weighing up to 30 pounds. Work is performed in the reception area and clinic exam rooms. Involves frequent contact with sick people and the public. Interaction with others is constant and interruptive.
- Requires physical hand dexterity and full range of motion to check patient vital signs, draw blood, operate a keyboard, and other office equipment as necessary. Vision must be correctable to 20/20 and hearing must correctable to the normal range for telephone and face-to-face contacts.
- It is necessary to view and type on computer screens for long periods and to work under stressful or emergency situations with high concentration and energy level. Position is in a well-lighted clinical office environment.
