The Forensic Nurse Examiner – RN or APRN is responsible for providing comprehensive care for patients who may have experienced sexual or physical assault. This includes assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation and evaluation. One FNE RN or APRN will be hired for each county to perform forensic exams. This position will float throughout Sussex County. This is a grant funded position through June of 2019, with hopes to expand the role past that date.

Clinical Judgement:

Meticulously document patient history utilizing patient quotations as much as possible. Perform photo documentation as needed.

Clinical Inquiry:

Obtain a medical and social history. Perform a complete head to toe assessment of the patient. Perform a detailed genital exam.

Caring Practices:

Obtain a history of presenting concern utilizing non-leading feedback and open-ended questions.

Response to Diversity:

Serve as a resource for pediatric forensic care throughout the Delaware Valley

Advocacy/Moral Agency:

Evaluate the need for collection of forensic evidence and perform a meticulous collection of such evidence as needed. Maintain chain of custody for forensic evidence. Provide courtroom testimony.

Collaboration:

Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team in the investigation of, and response to, sexual, emotional and physical trauma.

Systems Thinking:

Refer the patient and family for short and long-term follow-up of emotional, physical, and forensic or legal needs.

Facilitation of Learning:

Educate members of the hospital and medical teams about the role of the FNE in response to trauma.

  • Become involved in professional activities as evidenced by active participation in Nursing Shared Governance Councils/Committees or professional organizations.

  • Maintains a current knowledge base through participation in appropriate professional activities.
  • Performs all other related tasks as necessary or directed by manager.

Performance Skills

  • Maintains proficiency in the assessment of pediatric and adolescent genital exams and stays current with research on interpreting findings.
  • Maintains proficiency in recognizing signs of physical and emotional trauma.
  • Performs photo-documentation utilizing digital SLR camera.
  • Is able to utilize video documentation to obtain a detailed assessment of sexual trauma.
  • Is able to testify in court in a professional and objective manner.

Requirements

  • Active Delaware (or compact state) Registered Nurse Licensure required
  • Active Delaware Advanced Practice Nurse Licensure required (IF APN Candidate)
  • Current AHA Healthcare Provider (HCP) Certification required
  • At least 6 months of prior experience
  • Forensic Nurse Examiner Certification
