The Respiratory Therapist works with Hyperbaric Treatment Center (HTC) physicians and care providers to facilitate care of ventilated patients requiring hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). Maintain credentials and competencies, participate in HTC training and safety drills. This is an on-call position and will require the successful completion of a Didactic/Clinical Care Provider Course provided by HTC.

LOCATION: Kuakini Medical Center

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS

  • Serve as direct patient care respiratory specialist, both inside and outside chamber, during scheduled or emergency HBOT.
  • Perform respiratory and medical interventions as needed and/or directed by physician. Administer gasses, monitor and document respiratory vital signs and ventilator settings, perform arterial blood gas analysis.
  • Be available to work a minimum of 2 hours, training or direct patient care, per month
  • Communicate availability to participate in the respiratory on-call slate. Respond when called, and report to HTC for patient care when called if available.
  • Assist in developing ventilator protocols, pre-treatment and post-treatment checklists.
  • Participates in HTC training and safety drills.
  • Assists HTC Operations and Safety Director in respiratory equipment maintenance and inventory
  • Participates in the education of junior providers, residents and medical students as appropriate.
  • Supports clinical hyperbaric accreditation
  • Maintain clinical certification as respiratory specialist (RRT) and complete annual competencies.
  • Complies with all legal requirements and UHP policies.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned and commensurate with clinical training

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Education/Training
Minimum:

  • AS degree in Respiratory Care or higher
  • Current certification from the American Heart Association in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Credentialed as a clinical Respiratory Therapist (RRT) and licensed in Hawaii
  • Successful completion of Didactic/Clinical Care Provider Course as provided by HTC or equivalent Hyperbaric facility required to maintain employment

Preferred:

  • SCUBA Certification and/or familiarity with hyperbaric environment
  • CHT / CHRN certification through the National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technology

Skills Knowledge
Minimum:

  • Excellent communication skills

Factors for Success in the Position

  • The ability to work with equipment that requires the timely manipulation of valves and connectors.

EQUIPMENT USED

  • Familiar with hyperbaric chamber (inside) ancillary equipment
  • Hyperbaric-compatible ventilator (e.g. Univent) and accessories
  • Candidate will be cross-trained in rudimental operations of hyperbaric chamber and support equipment.

JOB CONDITIONS

  • Ability to work inside a chamber environment that is enclosed, pressurized and of small quarters.

MENTAL AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Requires ability to lift 100 pounds (assisting incapacitated patients).
  • Successful completion of a hyperbaric physical exam and in-chamber pressurization test
