The Alaska Veterans and Pioneers Home located in Palmer is hiring for an on-call Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) position.

The on-call Licensed Practical Nurse serves as an important member of the team by filling in for the full time staff during planned and unexpected absences.

Recent long term care and/or medical/surgical experience is desirable. The selected applicant will work with elderly residents who may experience physical limitations and varying rates of confusion/dementia, and will provide behavior interventions with confused residents when warranted.

The Duties of the selected applicant include but are not limited to:
  • Provides a full range of professional practical nursing care to residents under the general supervision of a Registered Nurse. This care includes the following: administer prescribed medications; observes residents for both objective and subjective symptoms; respond appropriately to emergency situations; document care accurately; and report pertinent information on an as needed basis to the primary care physician of the resident.
  • Interacts with residents, family members or other delegated persons.
  • Be professional and supportive to personnel who provide resident care.
  • Communicate with family and staff to promote resident quality of life.
  • Provide role modeling, assistance, guidance, and education to care team members to insure appropriate resident care and efficient teamwork.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of practical nursing.
  • Considerable knowledge of commonly used medications and their actions and side effects.
  • Considerable knowledge of the needs of patients.
  • Skill in the application of practical nursing techniques.
  • Ability to relate and interpret medical data.
  • Ability to observe and evaluate reactions and changes in the physical and mental condition of patients.
  • Ability to operate assigned health care equipment.
  • Ability to maintain routine operating records and to prepare periodic reports.
  • Ability to develop therapeutic relationships with patients.

  • This facility is an Eden Alternative facility. The selected candidate may have contact with pets including birds, cats, and dogs.
  • This position is an on-call position in support of the Pioneer Home, which is a 24 hour facility. Applicants must be willing to work any of the following shifts as needed: 6 am to 2 pm (Morning shift) 2 pm to 10 pm (Evening shift) 10 pm to 6 am (Night shift).
  • Employees of the Pioneer Home receive continual screening for tuberculosis and criminal history.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A diploma or certificate from an accredited school in practical nursing and eligibility for licensure as a practical nurse with the State of Alaska.

Special Requirements: Physical strength to lift, assist and transfer patients.

Special Note:
For some positions in this job class a background investigation including fingerprinting is required.

ADDITIONAL REQUIRED INFORMATION:

  • Provide a copy of current CPR and First Aid certificate(s), if available.
