Job Summary: Under the general supervision of the OR Charge Nurse, OR Nurse Manager and/or Director, is accountable for providing fiscally responsible patient care that is patient/family and outcome focused. The provision of patient care demonstrates knowledge and application of biophysical, psychosocial, cultural, educational, safety, discharge and self-care needs that are age specific for the patient population as identified in the unit’s scope of care. May be required to work weekends, holidays and various shifts as needed. Required to take call.

General Responsibilities:
- Upholds the organizations' Mission, Values and Goals by adhering to the NHS Standards of Performance.
- Establishes priorities based on patient needs and emergent unit activities.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the anatomical aspects of each surgical procedure, physiology and operative technique as it relates to first assisting. Considers the individual operative procedure, stage of operating and physical characteristics of the patient, type of tissue, hemostasis and wound closure as assigned. Demonstrates skills in tissue handling, utilizing retractors, surgical exposure, providing hemostasis, suturing and skin stapling. Performs efficiently in surgical emergencies and follows established protocols.
- The First Assist Registered Nurse acting in a scrub role is responsible to prepare the operative field and anticipate the patient and surgeons’ needs in accordance with written standards of nursing care.
- Handles instruments and supplies correctly and ensures their proper functioning, using care with sharps on the Mayo stand and when passing to surgeon. All needles remain in the pack or secured on a needle holder or in the needle counter.
- Assists with sterile table and room preparation. Maintains a clean and orderly environment through proper cleansing of equipment and/or disposal of equipment and containment of contaminated materials, sharps and needles used in unit activities.
- Identifies problems with care delivery methods and provides potential solutions to Administrative Director (in writing when appropriate).
- Consistently demonstrates knowledge of and competence in proper handling, delivering, assessing and disposing of medications, including IV therapy according to NMH policies. Maintains accurate record of medications used in the field during the procedure and completes charge slips for medication use.
- Interacts with patients and others in a courteous and respectful manner, inspiring confidence by performing and communicating in a professional and ethical manner. Demonstrates effective communication methods and skills by utilizing lines of authority properly.
WORK EXPERIENCE
- Current five (5) years, acute care staff nurse experience in peri-operative nursing required.
- Licensed RN in DE or compact state, or eligible for licensure
- Certification in Operating Room Nursing (CNOR).
- Member of AORN.
- Completion of approved RNFA Educational and Training Program based on the AORN Core Curriculum following proficiency in perioperative nursing practice both as a scrub and circulating nurse (minimum of five years of diversified OR experience).
- Certified or certification eligible as a RNFA (CRNFA) by the appropriate examining body-preferred.
- CPR or BLS required, ACLS preferred.
- Minimum one year OR staff nurse experience preferred.
