Head Veterinary Technicians, first and foremost need to have strong interpersonal relationship skills to manage their teams. Candidates for a head vet tech job should also be highly organized and self starting. In addition to their organizational duties, head techs should be accomplished in the care and treatment of animals in the facility. Because most medical records are kept centralized in computer bases, head vet techs should have strong computer skills, including knowledge of spreadsheets, word processing programs and other office productivity software.

Primary Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of a head veterinarian tech is to manage a team of veterinarian technicians. This includes scheduling other techs in a rota, or shift system, so that someone is on duty during business hours. Depending on the size of the organization, head vet techs may also be responsible for hiring and firing team members. The head vet tech assists the on-site veterinarian during surgeries and post-surgical procedures. Management of the patients in the facility is another main responsibility of the head vet tech, who draws up a plan for incoming patients and sets up quarantine procedures and wards, if needed. Head vet techs may collect clinical samples from patients and either perform tests on the samples in-house or arrange the shipment for a sample to an outside clinic for testing.

Secondary Tasks

Many of the secondary tasks of a head veterinarian tech revolve around clinic procedures and record keeping. The vet tech in charge of a clinic maintains an inventory log of all the drugs kept on-hand and files any state or federal paperwork as needed regarding controlled substances. The head vet techs oversees the ordering and inventory logs. Continuing following the AAHA guidelines and help establish new protocols and procedures when needed with the Practice Manger. Head vet techs see new patients as they come into the clinic and decide upon the immediacy of any care that needs to be administered.

Requirements:

  • Must hold a valid Registered Veterinary Technician License.
  • Must have at least 3 years experience working as a Registered Veterinary Technician.
  • Must have at least 1-2 years experience in a management role.

Upon Interview will be required to take the DISC test.

Job Type: Full-time

Salary: $18.00 to $20.00 /hour
