What You Will Do


The successful applicant will work as an electromechanical design resource for the group. He/she will work with weapons engineers, designers and management to ensure that product definition release from W-11 meets performance and standards requirements. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to travel periodically to other sites within the Nuclear Security Enterprise as well as to fabrication vendors to collaborate.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Experience with the creation and release of electronic, electrical or mechanical product definition including models and drawings for parts, assemblies, schematics, diagrams, etc.
  • Experience designing electronic, electrical and mechanical hardware assemblies, analog and digital control circuits, applying engineering concepts in design, analysis and fabrication of components.
  • Experience utilizing Electronic Design Automation (EDA) software (preferably Mentor Graphics) or Computer Aided Design (CAD) software (preferably Creo) developing products such as printed circuit boards (PCBs), enclosures, chassis, racks and related components.
  • Familiarity with fabrication processes including CAD to CAM data transfer related to semiconductors and PCBs using ODB++ or Gerber formatting.
  • Working knowledge of ASME Y series design/drafting standards, including Y14.5M Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Demonstrated effective and efficient written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated record of developing constructive, cooperative working relationships and working with teams to meet deliverables.

Desired Skills:

  • Demonstrated experience with PDMLink Product Lifecycle Management Software.
  • Demonstrated electrical and mechanical design experience with the weapons program.
  • Experience with ASME Y14.41 Digital Product Definition Data Packages and annotated models.
  • Experience with practices and procedures used in the Nuclear Security Enterprise for conveying design intent to other national laboratories and production plants.
  • Active DOE Q clearance

Education Required: A Bachelor of Science in engineering technology and/or an Associates of Science degree in design/drafting or equivalent years of relevant experience in lieu of degree requirement; least 2 years of relevant experience preferred

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.

Where You Will Work


Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.

The Weapons System Engineering Division (W Division) provides system engineering and program management to ensure the safety, reliability, and security of the US nuclear stockpile. W Division provides integral nuclear weapon engineering design expertise in the following areas: systems engineering; experimental device design, fabrication and assembly, surveillance, production of nuclear stockpile components, engineering analysis and computational simulation, weapons response and testing for evaluation and maintenance of the enduring and future nuclear weapon stockpile.

The primary mission of the Weapon Product Definition Group (W-11 Group) is to provide specialized weapon engineering, design, and product data management support to the Weapons Directorate. W-11 provides design definition for all the weapons programs including Hydrodynamic Experiments and Dynamic Plutonium Experiments.
