**JOB SUMMARY**

The scope of work for a Respiratory Therapist includes assessment, therapeutic intervention and education for patients with cardiopulmonary disorders or associated complications. Respiratory therapists assess individuals to prevent, detect, monitor and manage disease and complications. Respiratory therapists provide therapeutic interventions to directly impact cardiopulmonary health as well as overall health status according to established goals and interdisciplinary care plans. Respiratory therapists provide education to promote preventative care, self-management, enhanced cardiopulmonary health and quality of life. Performs regular assessments of patients and the equipment they are using in order to adjust therapy. Collect and/or analyzes patients' blood and other specimens to determine levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide and other gases. Measures the patients lung capacity to determine if there are any impairments. Offers diagnosis results and treatment suggestions based on the analysis of the patient.

**POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES**

Uses tools and technology to assess patients and implements respiratory treatment plans. Develops standard procedures for respiratory patient evaluation and assessment. Monitors patient responses to respiratory treatment plans and adjusts accordingly. Establishes and maintains productive working relationships within and outside of own area. Adheres to legal regulations and organizational policies when discussing patent health information. Follows guidelines, regulations, standards and safety procedures in the therapy process. Work as part of a team of physicians, nurses, or other healthcare professionals to manage patient care by assisting with medical procedures or related duties. Identifies common patient safety risks within the organization and how they can be avoided.

**DEPARTMENT DETAILS**

Must have current Respiratory Therapy licensure in state(s) of practice and/or possess multi-state licensure privileges as required by position. Must have RRT credentials as attained through the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) within six months of employment and maintain active status according to NBRC credentialing requirements. Must be certified as needed for specific equipment repair and calibration. Associates degree in Respiratory Care or equivalent course work is required. Two years experience working in a staff therapist role preferred. Must have a thorough knowledge and understanding of all procedures and indications, contraindications and hazards involved in respiratory care. The incumbent must have a working knowledge of all equipment and supplies utilized by respiratory care services staff. Basic Life Support certification is required.

**QUALIFICATIONS**

Must have current Respiratory Therapy licensure in state(s) of practice and/or possess multi-state licensure privileges as required by position. Must have Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credentials as attained through the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) and maintain active status according to NBRC credentialing requirements. Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) is required. Must obtain site-specific specialty credential(s) such as Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), etc. A degree in Respiratory Care from an accredited respiratory care program is required; minimum associate degree or equivalent as defined by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC). Respiratory Therapists must have a thorough knowledge and understanding of all procedures, indications, contraindications and hazards involved in respiratory care, as well as knowledge of equipment utilized in their department. The incumbent must be able to demonstrate the ability and knowledge required to utilize computers for patient documentation and data gathering for quality care. Must complete orientations, competency validations, and other in-servicing as required by the department and hospital.
