JOB TITLE: Assistant Director of Nursing

REPORTS TO: Director of Nursing

SALARY CLASSIFICATION: Salary Exempt, Full Time

General Description: Plans, organizes, develops and directs the overall operations of the Nursing Services Department in accordance with current federal, state and local standards and regulations, and as directed by the Director of Nursing. Ensures highest quality care is given at all times in a safe and secure facility while fostering and striving to attain the facility’s mission statement. The ADNS will also have knowledge of principles and practices of Epidemiology and infectious diseases in accordance with current applicable federal, state and local standards, guidelines and regulations. The ADNS may be directed by the departments’ director or administrator to assure that the highest degree of quality patient care can be maintained at all times.

Essential Job Functions:

Plans, develops, organizes, implements, evaluates and assists in directing the Nursing Services Department, its programs and activities within approved budget and quality standards in compliance with all federal, state and local regulations.

Assists in the investigation of Reportable Events, such as medication errors and accident/incident to assure completion, follow up, maintaining of current logs, and reports to the Department of Public Health when applicable.

Develops and leads initiatives focused on delivering quality patient care which includes random audits of medical records, completion of physician rounds, and record keeping by Nurse Managers. to ensure highest quality of care. Performs and reports data collection and outcome measurement as applicable to initiatives.

Assists in the development and implementation of quality assurance / performance improvement programs including subcommittees, and develops and monitors studies to address quality indicators.

Manages, investigates and develops action plans related to family/ resident grievances in coordination with Director of Nursing, nursing supervisors and nurse managers.

Participates in surveys and inspections by government agencies and plans of correction to correct deficiencies and ensure ongoing compliance.

Participates in meetings such as quarterly Medical Staff Meetings, Leadership and meetings with DON.

Provides support of care plan process that identifies all relevant issues and goals to be accomplished, assessing, reviewing and revising care plan including proper discharge plans and procedures.

Ensures that supplies are maintained at proper par levels and equipment maintained in good working order.

Participates in budget planning and recommends capital equipment needs of Nursing Department. Monitors cost implications and stays within budget.

Covers when Nurse Managers are on vacation.

Assists in interviewing and hiring of qualified staff. Maintains excellent rapport with staff.

Works in collaboration with Nurse Managers and Human Resources to review any staff performance issues to ensure that all staff is treated fairly and consistent with policies and applicable laws.

Maintains professional competency through participation in continuing education programs, seminars and in-services.

Detects, analyzes and records nosocomial infections on a systematic and current with the assistances of the physician and laboratory reports.

Advises others about the facility’s isolation policy and the disposition of residents admitted with infections, as well as in-house residents.

Together with the physician, is responsible for the investigation of all significant clusters of infection.

Assists in developing and implementing the approved infection control measures including treatment of pressure ulcers.

Presents In-service Training programs related to infection prevention and control.

Is the liaison with the physician, Health Director, and Connecticut Department of Health and Addictive Services in reporting “reportable” infectious diseases.

Responsible for environmental surveillance and safety rounds.

Responsible for documentation of rounds, findings, and reporting to ICC.

Is a member of the Infection Control Committee (Safety and Health Committee), and prepares and presents quarterly reports for the Committee meetings.

Attends workshops pertaining to Infection Control to gain knowledge and current practice.

Develops or revises infection control policies and procedures that are current with present standards of practice.

Is knowledgeable in infection control practices and OSHA guidelines.

Is responsible for Influenza clinics, PPD and Hep B injections.

Perform any other duties or responsibilities that may become necessary or as directed by the supervisor.

  • Participates in On Call
  • Frequently exposed to wet and humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, extreme cold and / or extreme heat.
  • Moderate noise level.

Entry Level Qualifications:

  • Must possess Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from accredited college or university with a minimum of five years experience in long term care.
  • Current State of Connecticut license for RN in good standing.
  • Minimum of two years leadership/management experience.
  • Clinical experience in a hospital or long term setting with reasonable knowledge in the principles of Epidemiology and infectious diseases in accordance with current applicable federal, state and local standards, guidelines and regulations.
  • Membership in Infection Control Organization.
  • Knowledgeable of state regulations and guidelines governing long term care.
  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
  • Attention to detail, good follow through skills, ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Proficient with computer software, including Word and Excel, and electronic medical records.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, feel, reach with hands and arms, talk, hear and listen, taste and smell.
  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 lbs and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50lbs.
  • Must be able to cope with mental and emotional stress of the position.
