Job Description

Qualifications:
1. Massachusetts license as a Registered Nurse
2. A bachelor or master degree in Nursing
3. A minimum of two years of experience as a R.N. in a clinical setting
4. Licensed or able to become Licensed as a School Nurse by the Department of Education

Reports to: School Principal/Pupil Personnel Director

Job Goal:
To maintain maximum health standards in compliance with Massachusetts State Health Regulations established for public schools.

Performance Responsibilities:

1. Conducts school health services for students, including measurement of heights and weights, and testing for hearing and vision.
2. Assumes responsibility for identification and referral of students in need of medical and dental care.
3. Reports to parents, school personnel, physicians and hospital and clinic agencies on school and student medical matters.
4. Maintains up-to-date cumulative health records on all students.
5. Observes students on a regular basis to detect health and medical problems.
6. Assumes authority, in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered injury or emergency illness
7. Conducts house visits in accordance with Chapter 766 regulations for evaluation of students, and whenever necessary for medical or health reasons.
8. Compiles and distributes school physical handicap lists of students to all staff members.
9. Advises on modification of student progress to meet health and medical needs of individual students.
10. Conduct classes in personal hygiene for grades 4 – 6.
11. Conduct classes in growth & development for grades 4 – 6.
12. Conduct a first aide course for the 6th grade.
13. Compiles and distributes a list of students with any vital health information such as medical condition and/or medication to all staff members.
14. Prepares and submits health and medical reports requested by the school department and the State Board of Public Health.
15. Assumes responsibility relating to exclusion of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases.
16. Functions as a case evaluation team member, in accordance with identification and evaluation procedures under Chapter 766, for students with special needs.
17. Address school staff members on health matters, particularly regarding screening for student health and medical defects.
18. Assists school personnel in establishing sanitary conditions in schools.
19. Attends committee meetings and conferences, and participates in in-service training programs relative to health services and health curriculum.
20. Dispenses medication including Psychotropic Drugs to students in accordance with State Department of Health Regulations and Physician’s written orders.

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually, in accordance with accepted district guidelines/procedures.

An Act Relative to Background Checks

On January 10, 2013, Governor Deval Patrick signed into law H.4307, an act relative to background checks. The new law requires all newly hired employees, beginning in the 2013-2014 school year, to submit to state and national fingerprint-based criminal background checks.

As a new employee of the Holbrook Public Schools, you will be subject to a Massachusetts criminal background check (CORI). In addition, you will be required to submit to a National Criminal Background Check by fingerprint.

The fee charged is $55.00 for licensed educators and $35 for all other school personnel.
