Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Four years of experience as a laboratory assistant, laboratory technical assistant, laboratory technician or blood bank phlebotomist. Two years of experience must have been as a laboratory technician.
SUBSTITUTIONS:
Completion of a twelve month training program in histological techniques under the supervision of a qualified pathologist will substitute for two years of the general experience and one year of the laboratory technician experience.
Satisfactory completion of a one year program in medical laboratory technology at an accredited vocational-technical school will substitute for two years of the general experience.
College training will substitute for the required general experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience provided that six semester hours of each thirty are in any one or a combination of these specialized fields: laboratory animal technology, laboratory animal science, animal science, biology, microbiology, chemistry, nursing, zoology, agricultural sciences, physics, bacteriology, histological techniques, medical technology, immunology, urology or renewable resources.
An associate degree in medical technology or nursing will substitute for two years of the general experience and one year of laboratory technician experience.
A baccalaureate degree with twenty-four semester hours in bacteriology, biology, histological techniques, medical technology, immunology, urology, zoology, chemistry, histopathology, mycology, or microbiology or any combination of the above coursework will substitute for two years of the general experience and one year of laboratory technician experience.
Certification as a Laboratory Animal Technician by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science will substitute for two years of the general experience and one year of laboratory technician experience.
Certification as a Laboratory Animal Technologist by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science will substitute for all of the required experience.
NOTE:
Any college hours or degree must be from a school accredited by one of the following regional accrediting bodies: the Middle States Commission on Higher Education; the New England Association of Schools and Colleges; the Higher Learning Commission; the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities; the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools; and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
For positions in Human Testing Laboratory:
Licensed to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Technician in the State of Louisiana as required by Louisiana Clinical Laboratory Personnel Law R.S. 37:1311-1329 and the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners.

Collects blood specimens on those difficult-to-draw patients such as pediatric, spastic, and uncooperative patients requiring considerable explanation, discussion, and persuasion.

Isolates, types, and groups bacteria and fungi present in body fluids, exudates, transudates, and other specimens.

Performs chemical tests and analyses of body fluids and other material related to clinical medicine or research in the medical sciences.

Performs various hematological tests and examinations such as red cell counts, white blood cell counts, platelet counts, hemoglobin determinations, and packed cell volume determinations.

Performs such procedures as glucose tolerance tests involving calculations of glucose required, explanation of procedure to patient and persuasion if necessary, and responsibility of results upon completion.

Performs ABO, Rh, and routine screening.

Operates and performs maintenance on the tissue processor or cryostat in histology.

Performs cytological procedures.
