  • Selects, cleans and assembles equipment to perform and monitor basic respiratory procedures.
  • Performs advanced life support procedures using independent judgment in coordinating patient's respiratory care plans and needs with the physicians, nursing, and ancillary staff.
  • Draws arterial blood gas samples and performs basic spirometry. Reviews all data, properly places data in patient chart and communicates all results to the physician and nursing staff.
  • Initiates and adjusts mechanical ventilator according to physician orders. Upon proper initiation of mechanical ventilation, maintains patient ventilator circuit, integrity of ventilation, and troubleshoots and correct associated problems with mechanical ventilation.
  • Confers with physicians to formulate and coordinate alternative forms of therapy and initiates patient ventilator weaning procedures under the direction of the physician.
  • Performs basic tracheostomy care including but not limited to routine and emergent tracheostomy tube changes.
  • Monitors patient's respiratory status using competent bedside assessment skills and maintains awareness of patient pH/electrolyte balance, ABG values, renal, neurological, and orthopedic functions as applicable to the delivery of respiratory care.
  • Coordinates and initiates patient and family education when indicated.
  • Maintains all respiratory therapy equipment both durable and disposable in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Possesses ability to differentiate between patient and equipment problems and intervenes appropriately.
  • Documents and communicates all patient concerns during the shift, by conferring with physician regarding patient progress and able to perform hand-off communication regarding patient status to other team members and the oncoming respiratory therapist.
  • Is responsive to patient care needs and provides assistance as an interdisciplinary team member including aiding in patient transports.
  • Performs all other duties as requested.
  • Current and valid state licensure as a Respiratory Therapist required
  • Registry status by the National Board for Respiratory Care preferred
  • Previous and recent critical care experience preferred
