This is a PRN position with a flexible schedule of at least 24 on-call hours/month, mandatory in-person meetings every other month, continuing education requirements, and a minimum 1 year contract.

The contracted Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) will provide timely, accessible, safe, trauma-informed, non-judgmental, compassionate care to the sexual assault or rape victim/survivor. This will include a forensic exam, prophylaxis for pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, photographic documentation, referrals for appropriate medical and psychological follow-up, support, collaboration with system and non-system-based advocates, and participation in legal proceedings. The SANE is expected to complete required training and follow protocols and procedures established by the Medical Director and/or Sexual Assault Services Coordinator. Specific responsibilities are outlined below:

Duties

Patient Services

  • Ability to triage patient to determine if medical exam is needed before forensic exam.
  • Coordinate care by all agencies involved in assisting the sexual assault survivor and coordinate referrals for appropriate medical and psychological follow-up as needed for each patient.
  • Perform and document sexual assault and forensic interview accurately.
  • Perform a complete physical and forensic evidence collection examination including head-to-toe assessment for trauma, detailed genital examination, forensic specimen collection and documentation, including photography, and assess for mandatory reporting status, reporting when appropriate.
  • Document detailed injuries accurately with support of photographic evidence.
  • Maintain chain of custody for each sexual assault exam and adhere to evidence protocols.
  • Maintain professional standards that do not create conflict of interests with employment or patient care, including patient and medical record confidentiality.
  • Serve in an on-call rotation to respond 24/7 to Code R exams within allotted time frame per established procedures and policies.
  • Must not be under the influence of drugs or alcohol while on-call.
  • Administer appropriate prophylactic medications per protocols.
  • Provide testimony as fact witness to any/all cases performed while with SANE and coordinate with attorneys during judicial process.
  • Responsible to maintain clinical expertise as a SANE:
  • Maintain current Registered Nurse Licensure or higher.
  • Complete the initial SANE Training (provided by Davis Forensic Nurses).
  • Complete the initial and ongoing preceptor requirements as identified by the SANE program.
  • Debrief as needed to maintain emotional and physical wellness.
  • Maintain open communication with SANE Coordinator and/or management of SANE Program on regular basis.
  • Maintain equipment in proper working condition and exercise fiscal responsibility of unit’s resources.
  • Share individual expertise with the other members of SANE.
  • Maintain competency by maintaining active performance of cases with no lapse of greater than six months.
  • Pass a SANE specific med-test upon initial SANE practice and every other year.
  • Participate in quality assurance chart and photograph review process as determined by the SANE program.
  • Adhere to all administrative, clinical, and employment policies and procedures on file with the SANE Program or hiring agency.
  • Commit to cover minimum number of shifts, holiday coverage, and other scheduling requirements as determined by the SANE program.
  • Participate in professional development as determined by the SANE program. including staff meetings, conferences, and in-services. * Performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions/Skills

  • Upon completion of training and preceptor requirements, the SANE will commit to 1 year of practice to the SANE Program. If the SANE leaves the Program before completion of one-year independent practice, they shall reimburse the SANE Program the stipend received for training and preceptor.
  • Excellent ability to assess a situation and intervene appropriately and effectively.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in various forms.
  • Respond empathetically to survivors of crime to reduce levels of trauma and provide support during crisis intervention.
  • Communicate and deal effectively with individuals and groups in stressful situations.
  • Work effectively under conditions of limited supervision, stress, and rapidly changing situations and circumstances. Capacity to work effectively and relate positively with others of diverse age, language, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religious belief, mental/physical ability, and socioeconomic status.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and communicate on documents such as safety rules, procedure manuals, and regulations.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from clients, regulatory agencies or members of the community.
  • Effectively listen to and understand information and ideas as presented verbally.

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse with current state registration.
  • Working knowledge of all OSHA safety and health standards relevant to the position and job duties.
  • Completion of a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner training by a recognized program within two months of selection.
  • One year’s experience in nursing.
  • Ability to plan and organize work autonomously.
  • Liaison with other human services agencies, clients, personnel and individuals in related programs.
  • Demonstrated initiative, resourcefulness and good judgment in executing the role and responsibilities of a nurse examiner.

Bilingual Qualification

  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) desired, though not required.
