Overview:

The Nurse Manager assesses, plans, implements and evaluates the effectiveness of nursing care delivered to the residents. Reporting to a Director of Nursing or similar, the Nurse Manager uses management and administrative skills to provide the highest level of quality care and accomplish corporate, department and facility goals. Also, the Nurse Manager executes and adheres to established policies and procedures, as well as systemic clinical changes.

Qualifications:
  • 5+ years’ experience in nursing preferably in an acute/long term care setting.
  • 2+ years supervisory experience.
  • Degree from an accredited school of nursing. BSN or BS in related field preferred.
  • Current NYS license and registration as an RN in good standing required.
  • Proven patient assessment skills.
  • Current knowledge of best practice nursing standards and care.
  • Proficient in the care planning process.
  • Ability and knowledge to respond in emergency situations.
  • Ability to analyze problems, plan resolution strategies, implement solutions and evaluate outcomes
  • Ability to lead, guide and motivate staff.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with clients, residents, and families from diverse backgrounds who may have physical, sensory and mental impairments.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a busy environment.
  • Proficient in MS Office programs and able to learn new software rapidly.

An equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.


Responsibilities:
  • Manages the clinical care planning process to ensure the coordination and delivery of quality patient care. Reviews and updates the care plan accordingly.
  • Manages the delivery of patient care, maximizing quality and efficiency as well as applying best practice guidelines. Provides direct patient care when indicated.
  • Ensures a safe and secure environment for clients/residents, staff and visitors.
  • Acts as the clinical liaison to other Loretto facilities and programs regarding client/resident needs, etc. Manages complex and routine patient situations in collaboration with other members of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Ensures residents/clients are assessed upon admission and periodically as conditions change. Makes assessments as needed.
  • Provides direct care when needed.
  • Obtains and implements Physician Orders, checking for accuracy and completeness.
  • Communicates effectively with the client/resident, family and interdisciplinary team and ensures staff members communicate effectively as well. Maintains the highest level of customer service within the area of responsibility.
  • Provides leadership and direction to personnel in accordance with organizational goals and mission.
  • Enforces the bargaining unit contract fairly and consistently. Addresses issues in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Plans, implements and evaluates the clinical competencies and on-going educational needs of the staff. Updates orientation or training materials as needed. Shares current knowledge and up-to-date clinical expertise with staff through formal and informal education. Takes responsibility for own education and stays clinically current.
  • Runs required monthly staff meetings across all shifts.
  • Mentors new employees and fosters positive, collaborative relationships.
  • Ensures patient care delivered with best practice standards.
  • Develops, reviews and revises policies, procedures and other applicable documentation to ensure regulatory agency standards are met. Interprets policies, procedures and regulations for the staff.
  • Ensures clinical staff understand and comply with all policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Directs the processes that facilitate the thorough and accurate completion of required documentation. Examples include but are not limited to: skin/wound reports, ADLs, weights, nourishment, monthly MAR/TAR checks, Admissions, Discharges, incident reports, investigations, audits.
  • Monitors adherence to the patient care standards through QAPI/QA processes. Is actively involved in the development, implementation and evaluation of QAPI activities. Serves as an active member of the QAPI/QA committees.
  • In cooperation/collaboration with the QAPI/QA department, directs the data collection of all complaint investigations, incident reports and critical incident investigations. Summarizes information and takes action after consultation with Director/QAPI/QA committee.
  • Reviews Point of Right to make improvements and changes in quality measures.
  • Keeps Director informed of patient care problems and issues in timely manner.
  • Manages unit expenses and costs (staff overtime, linens, supplies, etc.).
