Primary Job Function

The Unit Secretary/Transporter exceeds the expectations of patients and visitors by creating an extraordinary experience in the Emergency Department (ED) by greeting people warmly, sincerely and with empathy. Under the supervision of a registered nurse, performs general receptionist, secretarial and clerical duties in an accurate and timely manner while functioning as the focal communication source in the main ED nursing station.

This includes but is not limited to efficient, orderly and accurate processing of the patient’s record, courteous interaction and timely response to phone calls and call lights, accurate and timely initiation of department protocols and transporting patients within the hospital, maintaining a clean, safe environment and providing support services for patients, families and staff members.

Minimum Qualifications/Requirements:

A high school graduate or equivalent required. One year of hospital or office experience is preferred. Basic computer skills, ability to comprehend medical terminology and to work accurately under pressure.

Strong organizational skills in order to manage multiple tasks simultaneously combined with ability to effectively prioritize. Ability to be discrete and protect integrity of confidential information.

Highly developed interpersonal skills in order to relate to patients of all ages, staff members, physicians, and visitors, negotiate effective working relationships, and develop positive resolutions to conflict. A strong customer service orientation.

Must maintain CPR certification and respirator fit testing.


Working Conditions:

Typical office environment. Requires ability to work holidays, weekends, nights and evening hours. Tasks may involve occasional exposure to blood and body fluids or tissue. May be exposed to electrical, radiation and other hazardous materials. Must tolerate strong odors and frequent alarms. May include working long hours (including mandatory overtime) at a high level of stress.

Physical and Mental Activities, Tools and Equipment:

Occasional manipulation of large volumes of books, reports, files and office supplies.
Prolonged sitting, extreme attention to detail.
Lifting up to 10 lb. and pushing up to 300 pounds.
Use of Personal Computer and other standard office equipment (e.g. telephone, fax, copier, calculator, etc.) as well as standard patient care equipment (e.g. wheelchairs, carts, O2 tanks and IV poles)
Visual activity includes close paperwork, observation of patients and monitors. Hearing activity includes conversation with others, telephone and radio dialogue, and ability to hear auditory signals of monitoring equipment.
