A Career Counselor supports the Veterans Administration Transition Assistance Program (VA-TAP) implementation of the Veterans Opportunity to Work (VOW), the Hire Heroes Act and Veterans Employment Initiative (VEI) on behalf of the department of Veterans Affairs (VA), in the role of VA Benefits Advisor.

The Benefits Advisor (BA) provides transitioning service members (Active, Reserve, National Guard), family members, and Veterans a thorough understanding of earned VA benefits, awareness of education and training opportunities, and assistance in preparing for civilian employment.

The BA also provides formal VA benefits briefings to groups up to 50, individual counseling, and final transition readiness evaluations during events (such as Capstone) to provide final advice; and performs community outreach and public engagement events. Work at times will require extended hours, including week days, weekends and some holidays, generally anticipating and addressing emerging requirements under changing and constrained time lines. Individual must be familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Works under general supervision or independently and typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Position relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals; a certain degree of creativity and latitude is required.

Required Skills:
Requires a Bachelor Degree or equivalent experience plus at least two years’ benefits advisory / career counseling and advising experience. This position supports a U.S. Government Contract whose terms require Serco to staff it only with U.S. Citizens. The position you are being considered for is on a U.S. Government contract which will require applicants to successfully undergo and pass a background investigation (National Agency Check). Applicants must also successfully complete initial training to maintain employment. Applicants must be able to travel up to 10% and at times able to work outside normal work hours. Individual must have experience presenting prepared training to large groups, be familiar with military culture and experiences, have the ability to rapidly learn detailed information. This is a full-time temporary position for a period of not more than 180 days, but could be less.
