CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt (Temporary Full-time)

DEPARTMENT: Laboratory

POSITION SUMMARY:
The MLT is primarily a generalist responsible for day-to-day patient service via technical and informational operation of the laboratory. He/she is able to make independent decisions within the framework of standard laboratory practice, provide leadership by an example of integrity and professionalism, and ultimately service our patients and providers efficiently and courteously. Additional tasks may be assigned by the Laboratory Director.

Areas of responsibility: Chemistry, Microbiology, Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Phlebotomy, Processing, Documentation, Record Keeping & Laboratory Information Systems (LIS).

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience:
1. Must meet one of the following:

  • Associate’s degree from an accredited program for Medical Laboratory Technicians
    • Completed at least sixty semester hours (or equivalent) which included chemistry and biology from an accredited college or university and has either of the following:
      i. Completed an accredited program for medical laboratory technicians.
      ii. Completed an advanced military medical laboratory technician course in the United States Armed Forces of at least fifty weeks duration and held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist within the five years immediately prior to date of application for licensure.
      iii. HAR §11-110-30, HRS §§321-13, 321-14

2. Certification

  • American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), or
  • American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB), or
  • American Medical Technologists (AMT)

3. Hawaii State Department of Health (DOH) Clinical Laboratory license
4. Experience preferred but not necessary

Job Knowledge/Skills:
1. Shall be consistent with licensure requirements
2. Knowledge of and sensitive to the cultures and lifestyles of the community
3. Familiar with CLIA and OSHA regulations
4. Familiar with standard laboratory practices
