Summary:
Under the direct supervision of the Clinical Manager (or designee) the Pediatric Transport Nurse will implement supervise and evaluate the nursing care of each patient on transport using a nursing process and in accordance with established departmental policies and procedures. Provides for all inter-facility pediatric transport referrals and performs related administrative duties in support of the pediatric critical care transport team.
Responsibilities:
Provides inter-facility transport of pediatric patients from outlying facilities to Hasbro (PICU and inpatient units) as well as from Hasbro to outlying facilities in accordance with guidelines policies and procedures of the pediatric critical care transport team.
Inspects equipment used for transport in collaboration with the transport respiratory therapist as appropriate. Ensures availability of all equipment and supplies that may be necessary to provide for scheduled and emergent transports.
May provide in-house transport to PICU and inpatient unit patients who require diagnostic tests or procedures off the unit. Such transport may be accompanied by the patients nurse as requested or as relief to the nurse. For transports of intubated patients a respiratory therapist and physician will accompany the transport nurse.
Attends charge nurse meetings at their scheduled times.
Performs related administrative duties such as collection of transport statistics for entry into a computerized database monthly quality assurance of equipment and supplies and the like.
Participates in community outreach and in-house educational efforts such as nursing grand rounds etc.
Follows up with referring facilities regarding patient outcomes and transport-related issues.
Meets and maintains clinical competencies measured by pre-determined credentialing standards mandatory/safety education and completion of Basic Life Support and PALS.
Transport staff will comply with all state and federal regulations regarding EMS criteria.
Other information:QUALIFICATIONS:
Must have current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island.
Baccalaureate in nursing preferred.
Basic Life Support and PALS certification required.
Must obtain TNCC ACLS burn and NRP training within one year in position.
Must complete credentialing specific to transport within 3 months.
Three years current experience as a professional nurse providing care to infants and pediatric patients within a pediatric intensive care unit is required.
Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to pediatric patients with consideration of the aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
Transport nurses will be expected to obtain advanced skills training within the determined orientation period.
Such advanced skills will include but are not limited to LMA intubations EJ lines and intraosseus placement.
Any advanced skills designation will be jointly determined in congruence with scope of practice certifications licensure training and ongoing maintenance of competence and assurance of appropriate liability coverage.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Visual and aural ability to monitor patient status.
Physical requirements include the ability to sit stand and walk for long periods and the ability to bend crouch and kneel. Must be able to lift a minimum of 50lbs and on occasion the ability to move up to 200 lbs.
Ability to work in small confined spaces and able to work in a mobile environment.
Patient care area with some exposure to infectious disease.
Inter-facility transport may be carried out in all types of weather conditions.
