What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Technologist 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Pulsed Field Facility (PFF) is located on the main LANL campus in Los Alamos, New Mexico. LANL is one of three NHMFL partner institutions, the other two are the University of Florida, Gainesville, and at Florida State University, Tallahassee. The NHMFL is sponsored primarily by the National Science Foundation (NSF), Division of Materials Research, with additional support from the State of Florida and the Department of Energy. LANL provides unique capabilities to the Pulsed Field Facility for the NHMFL in the form of a 1.4 GVA pulsed power system. In addition to the 100 Tesla Multi-Shot Pulsed Magnet and the 60 T Long Pulse Magnet, the NHMFL features several capacitor-driven pulsed magnets and state-of-the-art diagnostic capabilities for materials science research. The PFF supports a user facility, develops magnet technology, and advances science and technology using high magnetic fields in support of the goals and objectives of NSF and Los Alamos National Laboratory.

LANL and the U.S. National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL) are seeking a highly motivated and technically excellent Technologist to support the Magnet Operations and Scientific Techniques (MOST) Team, part of the Magnet Science Group (MAG) and the Materials Physics and Applications Division (MPA). The MOST team has a central and critical role in LANL’s portion of the NHMFL and operation of the Pulsed Field Facility (PFF). The NHMFL is a user facility dedicated to basic research, with research initiatives in materials, energy, and life sciences. The PFF holds the world record for nondestructive, repeatable magnetic fields for science experiments (100 Tesla), with users coming to LANL from around the world. Funding for the NHMFL and the PFF comes primarily from the National Science Foundation (NSF), with additional support from LANL institutional science investments. This is a very exciting time for MPA-MAG and the PFF, with new projects for making major leaps in maximum magnetic field, simultaneously achieving ultra-high pressure, understanding the nature of quantum matter, and a wide variety of measurement techniques.

The Research Technologist will work supporting projects and programs for both internal and external user program customers. The successful candidate will work closely with scientists, engineers, technologists, and technicians to carry out research relevant to conducting experiments to understand material responses to extreme pulsed magnetic field environments. Interpersonal communication and teamwork are important elements of this work environment, as is a commitment to LANL’s safety and security culture.

Research Technologist 1 ($73,800 - $120,400)

  • The Magnet Operations & Scientific Techniques (MOST) Technologist will closely work with the MOST team leader to support and maintain MPA-MAG efforts for magnet cell operations; sample environments; associated scientific measurement techniques and instrumentation.

  • Supporting MPA-MAG scientists engaged in user support activities.

  • Works closely with other MPA-MAG Technologists and Technicians to ensure success of the PFF and scientific future of MPA-MAG.

  • Maintains supplies and stocks of user program equipment, including vacuum components, electronic equipment and cryogens.

Research Technologist 2 ($81,600-$133,400):

  • All duties above.

  • Work independently, without supervision, to meet goals of the day to day user program activities.

  • Collaborate and participate in MPA-MAG and user scientific activities.

  • Lead facility or capability improvements.

  • Act as a formal mentor to other technologists, technicians and students in the group.

  • Independently design, construct novel, cryogenics and sample environments for pulsed field applications.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience with scientific instrumentation including gathering experimental data, troubleshooting, maintenance, and installation.

  • Demonstrated experience with vacuum systems and cryogenics

  • Demonstrated experience in machine shop activities.

  • Ability to work on multi-disciplinary teams as well as work independently to complete projects

  • Strong communication skills, both orally and in writing, for a wide range of audiences.

  • Ability to formulate and implement innovative approaches and solutions to problems.

  • Hold either (a) Bachelor’s degree and two years of related experience or (b) an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Job Requirements for Research Technologist 2:

In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Research Technologist 2 level requires:

  • Demonstrated strong communication skills as evidenced through talks and peer-reviewed publications.

  • Demonstrated mentoring skills of students and other technologists.

  • Demonstrated ability to design and manufacture cryogenic experimental systems.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with designing and building custom hardware, including SolidWorks or similar CAD knowledge.

  • Strong computer skills including experience with database management and/or simulations.

  • Demonstrated experience with measurement techniques similar to those in use at the NHMFL, PFF, or similar facilities.

  • Familiarity pulsed magnet and capacitor bank systems.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain DOE Q clearance (generally requires U.S. citizenship).

Additional Details:
