Provides hand therapy to patients in varying states of health and illness. Hand therapy is a merging of occupational and physical therapy theory and practice that combines comprehensive knowledge of the upper quarter, body function, and activity in the rehabilitation of the upper quarter of the human body. Hand therapists specialize in the treatment of pathological upper-quarter conditions resulting from trauma, disease, congenital or acquired deformities. Hand therapists promote the goals of prevention of dysfunction, restoration of function and/or reversal of the progression of pathology in order to enhance participation in life situations for individuals with upper quarter disease or injury. Hand therapists function as essential members of therapy and multidisciplinary teams providing direct care to patients. They teach and prepare patients/families for continued care after discharge. The hand therapist may be involved in consultative services within the organization and in the community. The hand therapist demonstrates dedication to professional growth and development and to the continuous improvement of patient care.
EDUCATION:
Bachelor of Science or higher degree from an Accredited Occupational Therapy or Physical Therapy program. Licensed or eligible to be licensed to practice occupational or physical therapy in the State of Vermont. Certified by the Hand Therapy Certification Commission.
EXPERIENCE:
Must meet practice experience requirements for HTCC certification (CHT). This includes 4,000 hours of Direct Practice Experience in Hand Therapy for initial CHT certification. For recertification, 2000 minimum hours of work experience (1000 hours must be in hand therapy clinical practice) over the course of 5 years is required.
