The Capstone College of Nursing (CCN) at the University of Alabama is seeking a dynamic leader for our graduate programs. CCN has over 2,400 students enrolled in programs leading to BSN, MSN, DNP, EdD and PhD degrees. At the MSN level, we offer concentrations for Nurse Administrators, and Nurse Practitioners. Our interdisciplinary EdD program is designed specifically for nurse educators and is jointly taught by faculty with expertise in nursing and education. A new online PhD program just opened in 2019. The Assistant Dean for Graduate Programs (ADGP) is appointed by the Dean, as a member of our Executive Leadership Council, to provide leadership and manage the day-to-day activities of the graduate programs.
Responsibilities:
A. Administration
1. Provides leadership across graduate programs in refining, implementing, and evaluating curricula.
2. Participates in recruitment and orientation of new faculty to the graduate programs.
3. Manages Graduate Program Records Office staff to oversee graduate student recruitment, advising, and record-keeping.
4. Makes teaching assignments for faculty in the graduate programs.
5. Evaluates graduate faculty.
6. Serves as the College of Nursing liaison with the University Graduate School and colleges that provide dual or joint graduate degree programs.
7. Submits traineeship applications and reports; and supervises selection and retention of trainees.
8. Collaborates with the Dean and other administrators to manage projected student enrollment and faculty resource needs.
9. Provides leadership to faculty for developing graduate components of accreditation documents and site visits.
10. Facilitates revisions of the CCN portion of the Graduate School catalog, CCN Faculty Handbook, CCN Graduate Student Handbooks and CCN Graduate website.
11. Oversees the graduate student admission process.
B. Teaching
Teaches at the graduate level, at least one course per year, and serving as chair and/or advisor for a limited number of doctoral students.
C. Research/Scholarship
  • Identifies, applies for, and manages externally funded grants.
  • Conducts research and/or program evaluations.
  • Publishes in peer reviewed journals.
  • Assists with research mentorship of junior faculty.
D. Service
  • Engages in college, university, and community service.

Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must have an earned doctorate in nursing or a related field, five years of academic experience, demonstrated success with extramural grant funding, and be eligible for licensure in Alabama. Preference will be given to candidates with experience teaching in doctoral programs and/or certification as a nurse practitioner. Applicants are encouraged to submit a cover letter addressing their research and teaching experience and future goals along with a current curriculum vitae. Prior to employment, the successful candidate must pass a pre-employment background investigation.
