The Emergency Department Technician performs stocking, and cleaning functions within the department, assists in the provision of basis patient comfort measures, performs certain technical duties as assigned by the licensed staff, within competencies measured , and assists in the provision of basic patient comfort measures, performs certain technical duties as assigned by the licensed staff, within competencies measured, and assists with portering of patients, specimens, and equipment as required by the department.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Takes responsibility to care for the organization and cleanliness of the department. Beds will be cleaned and changed between patients, rooms will be cleaned between patients, patient care areas will be stocked, hallways and non-patient care areas will be kept clean, unused equipment will be cleaned and properly stored. Garbage and linen receptacles will be kept from overflowing. The tech will work with materiel management to assure that adequate patient supplies are present within the department.

2. Documents all patient care activities in the appropriate portion of the ED record and will report to licensed personnel all patient care activities completed. ED Tech must be competent with order entry to assist nursing & carry unit secretary duties.

3. Assists with patient care by assisting with splinting, discontinuing IV's, putting patients on monitor's on arrival to the unit, taking vital signs, collecting specimen's, setting up suture trays, pelvic trays, etc., assisting patients to undress on arrival to unit and to dress on departure, crutch-walk training, and other duties assigned by licensed staff. All care given is specific to the developmental and physical age of the patient. Care is done under the direct or indirect supervision of the licensed care giver.

4. Assists with maintaining patient comfort and satisfaction in the department by supplying such services as trays of food, drinks, extra blankets, or other comfort measures, setting up play pen or other amenities for assistance with child care. Keeping patient's informed of reasons for wait. Visiting with patients during times of wait, and other comfort measures as deemed appropriate.

5. Takes responsibility for portering patients to and from radiology or other areas for diagnostic studies, assisting with portering of patients to inpatient units, or surgery. Assisting patients out of vehicles on arrival as required. Assisting patients to waiting room after discharge. Portering specimens to appropriate area and portering equipment to appropriate areas as requested by licensed personnel. Portering flight crews from helipad to ER, use of ambulance stretchers for transport & loading & unloading of helipad patient/equipment. The ED technician is responsible for starting &safety check of the ambulance used for helipad transport.

6. Demonstrates professionalism by arriving to work on time and leaving on time. Absences will be minimal and within hospital policy. The tech will read all memos in the communication book each shift and will attend 75% of staff meetings. Dress will be neat and according to hospital policy. The tech will maintain all mandatory in-services, attend appropriate ongoing education, and maintain an ongoing educational record throughout the year recording all educational activities.

Job Qualifications
  • Education

High School diploma or equivalent required.



  • Work Experience

Previous experience as a Nursing Assistant preferred. Previous Emergency Department experience preferred.



  • Certification/License

EMT-B or certified Nursing Assistant Certificate preferred.


Mental/Physical Requirements

Considerable mental concentration required. Lifting up to 35 lbs., turning activities and nearly constant walking required. Standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.


Working Conditions

Frequent exposure to communicable disease via blood and body fluids. Occasional exposure to infectious diseases, radiation, anti-neoplastic, and hostile persons at times. Works with sharps and other potentially biohazardous material.
