Clinical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist

I. Basic Purpose:

Under limited supervision, performs tests on blood and other specimens to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

II. Major Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Complies with established corporate and departmental policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance methods, and safety codes. Demonstrates compliance with licensing, regulatory and accrediting agency provisions as required.

2. Consistently demonstrates appropriate and professional communication behavior toward patients, customers, and coworkers. Cooperates with Management and peers to promote an environment of teamwork and collaboration.

3. Receives and processes specimens sent to the laboratory, determines acceptability of specimens, orders laboratory tests as appropriate.

4. Performs all required procedures, producing accurate results in an appropriate time frame. Verifies abnormal results by repeat testing when necessary.

5. Operates equipment correctly, and successfully completes all troubleshooting; performs daily and preventative maintenance on laboratory instruments. Notifies supervisor of discrepant results, problems with Quality control, or nonfunctioning equipment. Attempts to resolve problems, and completes corrective action as necessary.

6. Maintains an appropriate amount of supplies at the bench level, and notifies supervisor when reorders are necessary.

7. Performs required Quality Control procedures according to laboratory policy.

8. Telephones results when necessary and documents such action.

9. Reports results accurately on worksheets and via computer. Recognizes and respects privileged information; no breach of confidentiality occurs.

10. Trains new employees/students when requested.

11. Performs evaluation of new products and/or procedures and submits the evaluation within the agreed-upon time frame.

12. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops; assumes responsibility for own competency and continuing education.

13. Maintains good relations with patients, medical staff, and other departments as well as other hospitals that use laboratory services; notifies supervisor of problems encountered in dealing with physicians, nurses, clients, or other personnel.

14. Attends meetings as required.

15. Maintains annual mandatory education requirements specific to position as mandated by Martin Health System.

16. Performs all other duties as assigned or requested.

III. Minimum Requirements (experience, training, and education):

To effectively fulfill this position, candidate must meet the following requirements:

> Must have an A.S. degree (B.S. degree preferred) in medical technology or a related science.
> ASCP certification preferred; sufficient previous clinical experience in the required areas of the laboratory.
> Current, valid State of Florida Technologist License or eligible –Primary Source online verification required directly from State of Florida licensing database.
