Job Summary:
Under the specific direction of the Nurse, the OrthoTech performs a variety of functions that support patient care within the unit. The OrthoTech assists with general patient care, data collection, documentation, application of monitoring devices, communicates patient data to nurse, stocks necessary equipment and supplies in patient rooms, and clerical duties. The employee will demonstrate knowledge in the current concepts of his/her field and is responsible for providing quality service to patients and families that allows for independent work to be accomplished.

General Responsibilities:
  • Upholds the organizations' Mission, Values and Goals by adhering to the NHS Standards of Performance.
  • Maintains strict Infection Control Precautions with the exception of Emergent situations.
  • Performs or assists patient with activities of daily living (including bathing, elimination needs, perineal care, oral care, shaving, hair care and eye care, mobility needs such as transfer from bed to chair, ambulating, use of a walker,or passive range of motion), measurement of accurate intake and output, and performing of vital signs including screening patients for pain, per policy. Will proficiently apply cardiac monitors, pulse oximeters, perform EKG’s and use of the glucometer. Attempts comfort measures for relief of pain such as relaxation videos, hand massages and ambulation. Changes linens, assuring they are dry and wrinkle free daily and when needed throughout the day. Keeps patient environment tidy. Documents and reports significant/abnormal findings to licensed staff in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the use of the unit computers by correctly entering and retrieving data in multiple software programs (i.e. Cerner, Word, Excel, EBC, QS, Masimo, Welsch Allen, etc.).
  • Demonstrates fiscal accountability by efficient entry of patient charges, discontinuation of rental equipment, and responsible inventory practices. Maintains an adequate inventory of forms and supplies used on the unit.
  • Demonstrates understanding of the management of patient safety including the potential for injury and intervention for clinical emergencies. Adheres to appropriate precautions to prevent patient falls, keeps bed in low position after patient care, proper use of personal and bed alarms, follows seizure or aspiration precautions if indicated, carefully checks on patients while they are toileting. Assures patients is in age appropriate safe environment with proper lighting, side rails, assistive devices close by if needed, etc. Responds appropriately to the patient at risk of suicide (adhering strictly to the observation and recording guidelines), use and restraints, and communicating safety and/or quality concerns. Adheres to infection control standards.
  • Demonstrates ability to set up and maintain Traction for Orthopedic patients.
  • Is responsible for the environmental cleaning of the room while patient is in Joint Camp.
  • Educates the joint/orthopedic patient on use of ice packs and is responsible for maintaining the rotation of ice packs every 2 hrs and as needed.
  • Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, ethical, responsible, and courteous environment. Maintains open communication using appropriate chain of command regarding issues. Communicates effectively with patients, families, physicians, and/or staff to achieve desired outcomes both in person and via written/telephone communications with appropriate telephone etiquette. Communicates any changes in patient status, abnormal vital signs, or pain, and refers patient requests, complaints, or questions to the nurse.
  • Assists in safe transport of patients from registration, to OR and from PACU to the unit as well as transport patients to their vehicle at discharge and proficiently educate the ortho patients on car transfers.
  • Assist with the setup of all preadmission rooms for both the total joint patients and bariatric pre admissions.

Requirements:
Work Experience:
  • Previous Secretary and/or nursing assistant experience in an Acute Care setting preferred.
  • Evidence of: a) Effective communications, b) Self-motivation, c) Problem solving skills, d) Accountability, e) Flexibility
  • Basic computer knowledge preferred.
  • Medical Terminology preferred.
  • CPR required.
Education Requirements:
  • High School graduate or equivalent required. C.N.A. Certification preferred. Previous experience as a nursing assistant or EMT, or enrollment in nursing school preferred.
