Clinical Assistant/Associate/Full Professor - Small Animal Internal Medicine and/or Emergency Medicine and Critical Care Job Opening

The Department of Clinical Sciences at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Auburn University, is seeking applicants to fill a full-time, non-tenured, 12-month appointment as a Clinical Assistant/Associate/Full Professor in small animal internal medicine and/or emergency medicine and critical care at the Auburn Veterinary Specialists- Gulf Shores in Gulf Shores, Alabama. This new veterinary referral center will provide veterinary care in support of veterinarians in the Gulf Coast region. The referral center will also participate in the educational mission of the College of Veterinary Medicine, providing continuing education programs for veterinarians and focused clinical instruction to senior veterinary students, interns and residents.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate must be an experienced internist and/or criticalist, knowledgeable in the operation of a robust internal medicine and/or emergency and critical care service in private practice or academia. Clinical responsibilities will include medical diagnostics and therapeutics of small animal patients and engagement of referring veterinarians. Clinical instruction of participating veterinary students, interns, and residents will be integrated into all aspects of daily operations, including communications to referring veterinarians and clientele. Primary care will not be offered at the referral center, however the hospital will initiate an after-hours and weekend emergency service for veterinarians in the Gulf Shores region.

About the AUBURN VETERINARY SPECIALISTS – GULF SHORES: The AUBURN VETERINARY SPECIALISTS – GULF SHORES is part of a new 26-acre Auburn University Educational Complex being built through a cooperative agreement between Auburn University and the City of Gulf Shores. The complex was completed in 2018 and is located along the Foley Beach Expressway in Baldwin County, the fastest growing county in Alabama, which hosts 5.7 million visitors annually and is the center of a referral base of 675,000 residents along the Gulf Coast. The 18,000 square foot referral center will serve as an extension of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital located in Auburn to provide specialty veterinary services and related educational opportunities in clinical veterinary education. Auburn University’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital has long served as a referral center for veterinarians practicing in South Alabama and West Florida.

The referral center has six exam rooms, two operating rooms (with separate rooms for anesthesia induction, surgical preparation, and recovery), intensive care and critical care areas, central treatment room, endoscopy room, laboratory, pharmaceutical dispensing area, advanced imaging capabilities (radiography, ultrasound, MRI, and CT), infectious disease isolation area, nutrition center, and canine and feline wards. The facility will be permanently staffed with Auburn University veterinarians, technicians, and office personnel. The referral center is currently staffed by a veterinary surgeon, hospital director, radiology technician, six veterinary technicians, and additional office staff.
Faculty from Auburn’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital will provide specialty services through temporary on-site assignments and electronic consultation. The center has a well-equipped conference room that will be used for veterinary continuing education programs, held regularly, and provided by Auburn faculty.

The nearby Gulf State Park has beaches, trails, a pier, plus a golf course and the Gulf State Park Lodge, that opened in 2018. To the west, sea turtles and migratory birds thrive among the coastal habitats of Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge. Farther west, 19th-century Fort Morgan guards Mobile Bay. The State’s Dauphin Island Sea Lab is located across Mobile Bay and is a hub for marine science education, marine research and coastal zone management.

Minimum Qualifications

Requirements/ Qualifications: Qualified applicants must hold a DVM or equivalent degree and be a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and/or the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care at the time employment begins. The successful candidate should have excellent communication skills and a high level of self-motivation, and be a team-builder committed to practicing compassionate high quality medicine.

Desired Qualifications

Experience and skill in ultrasonography is desired.
