The Student Counseling Center at the University of South Dakota has an immediate opening for a 12-month position of Mental Health/Substance Abuse Counselor. Under the direction and supervision of the Director/Clinical Coordinator, this position provides counseling to registered students in both areas of mental health and substance abuse. This counselor will provide general counseling support for students experiencing psychosocial difficulties and academic issues as well as issues related to mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, eating disorders, and substance use. The ideal candidate would be dually credentialed or have the ability to become dually credentialed in the field of mental health and substance abuse in the state of South Dakota. The counselor will also be a central liaison for students as well as the center by collaborating effectively with other services and resources on campus and in the community.

    Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Work to enhance the quantity and quality of services provided to students.
  • Plan and implement programming for all USD students related to self-care, healthy choices, stress reduction, relationships, and substance use.
  • Interact and communicate effectively and respectfully within the context of varying beliefs, behaviors, orientations, identities, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Serve as a resource and work collaboratively and cooperatively with other campus constituencies.
  • Provide training for student groups and advise student groups, as appropriate.
  • Duties include varied hours of an atypical work schedule.
  • Collaborate regarding essentials responsibilities of the center including grant writing, maintenance of grant requirements, billing, updated policies and procedures and supervision of graduate students/interns as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
    Qualifications:
  • A master’s degree required in counseling or related discipline such as social work or psychology with the ability to be licensed within their discipline by their South Dakota board. Candidate with also be expected to obtain a licensure as a substance abuse counselor within the state of South Dakota.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity, respect, understanding for college students from diverse backgrounds, experiences and perspectives.
  • Knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices associated with counseling college students and the stress they experience in relation to development and identity.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience public speaking, facilitating events, and conducting presentations.
  • Demonstrated ability to build collaborative, productive, and respectful relationships with students, faculty, administrators, and community organizations.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience working in the counseling field. Related experience in a higher education context is preferred. A combination of education and experience may be considered.
